The late former President Corazon Aquino should be recognized as a national hero to ensure “the continuity of her legacy of democracy and love of country,” according to two lawmakers.
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Former President Corazon Aquino's body made its final journey through the Philippine capital Wednesday to be buried next to her assassinated husband in a culmination of grieving for the icon hailed as the example of moral leadership.
Nobody expected her, an ordinary housewife, to rise to topple someone who, wielding unbridled and inexhaustible power, seemed destined only to last forever.
In his homily, Bishop Florentino Cinense said: “The more we praise her, the more we reveal that we, too, desire to be like her … Let her life and virtues challenge us to strive to do even better.”
US PRESIDENT Barack Obama and other world leaders expressed sadness at the death of former Philippine President Corazon Aquino, describing her as a historic figure who helped restore democracy to her country.
Her entire life was an example of moral courage. After the assassination of her husband, Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr., she was called upon to lead the fight against the Marcos dictatorship and she did not flinch from the challenge.
