Carnival

Heroes Without Borders

Giant photographs pasted on the facades of buildings at Commune 1, a shantytown with one of the highest rates of urban violence in Medellin, Colombia. The municipality of Medellin hosts an artistic project called "Heroes Without Borders," an exhibition of 23 photographs placed in different facades and roofs aimed at preventing the recruitment of children by illegal syndicates.

Penance

A Hindu devotee makes his way towards Batu Caves to perform religious rites before sunrise during the Thaipusam festival on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. Thaipusam is celebrated during the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai and commemorates the birth of Hindu deity Murugan. To mark this day of penance and thanksgiving, Hindus pierce their body with metal skewers and carry pots of milk on their heads in procession.


Feast of Devils

A Boruca native wears a devil wooden mask during the Feast of the Devils celebration in Rey Curre, 300km south of San Jose, Costa Rica. The festivity symbolises the bloody battles that the Borucas -- the devils -- carried out more than five centuries ago against Spanish conquerors, the bull.

Cold snap

A flock of sheep standing in the snow at a farm in the northern Spanish Basque village of Oquendo. A cold snap has kept Europe in its icy grip, pushing the death toll to 160 as countries from Italy to Ukraine struggle to cope with record low temperatures.


Bird refuge

A flock of nothern ducks flying in front of the church in the village of Musov, where the Nove Mlyny water reservoirs were built, flooding everything but the church. More than 70,000 northern ducks are wintering in the Nove Mlyny water reservoirs in South Moravia, about 30km south of Brno. Nove Mlyny is the largest wintering area for birds in the Czech Republic and one of the most significant bird areas in Central Europe.
