My Sinchew/ The Red ICs

“Being a true Malaysian is the greatest wish of my life!”

He has been facing with all kinds of twists and turns because of the red IC.

He has been seeking for the assistance of some “influential” figure, including senior officers and politicians, but receives no help all these years.

Keep trying for a blue IC

As his father's name on the citizenship certificate is inconsistent with the name written on his birth certificate, Lim Teong Heng, who was born in 1952, and his six siblings are unable to get the Malaysian citizenship.

Fearful of own identity

On 16 September, at a ceremony held by the home ministry to hand over citizenships to 92 people, a woman who had just been granted her citizenship hugged the home minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein in overwhelming excitement.

A 66-year-old granny and her 6-year-old grandson have been facing a lot of obstacles in their lives and studies because of their stateless status.

“It is a pity to be a marginal man!”

He takes a keen interest in Malaysia's current affairs and politics. He also attends political talks regularly. He used to ride his motorcycle around to experience the atmosphere during election periods. However, he is only an observer and has never had the opportunity to cast a vote.

"I'm like a locally born alien!"

"I was born and raised here, but when I grew up, I was denied citizenship! There isn't a country in this world that would recognise me. "I'm like... an alien!"

A 45-year wait

Born and raised in Malaysia, and is even five years older than Malaysia, yet Chen Shunhao could only be contented with a red IC despite his 45-year wait for citizenship.

"I want to vote!"

Her greatest regret in the past 64 years was not able to fulfill her civic responsibility of voting as she was holding a red identity card. She was not a “Malaysian citizen” and had not right to vote.
