KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 (Bernama) -- The sales value for the manufacturing sector in May 2014 rose by 5.5 per cent (RM2.8 billion) to RM53.1 billion from the RM50.3 billion reported in the same month a year ago.
On a month-on-month basis, the sales value decreased by 0.4 per cent (RM0.2 billion) compared with the preceding month.
The sales value in April 2014 was a revised positive 7.8 per cent year-on-year to record RM53.3 billion, said the Department of Statistics Malaysia in its Monthly Manufacturing Statistics here today.
"On a seasonally-adjusted month-on-month basis, the sales value in May increased by 0.7 per cent," it added.
The department said the total employees engaged in the manufacturing sector in May was 1.029 million persons, an increase of 0.2 per cent compared with the preceding month.
Meanwhile, on a year-on-year basis, the number of employees increased by 0.3 per cent (3,033 persons) compared with 1.026 million persons in the same month last year.
The department added that total employees in April was a revised positive 0.3 per cent year-on-year to record 1.027 million persons.
On a month-on-month basis, salaries and wages paid in May declined by 1.6 per cent (RM44.5 million) to register RM2.817 billion.
The total amount paid in May increased by 7.5 per cent (RM196.5 million) compared with the corresponding month of the previous year.Salaries and wages paid in April was a revised positive 7.3 per cent year-on-year to record RM2.86 billion.
