Even though they have been denied of their two-third majority, the ruling party still has 60% of the seats and is still a strong government.
Barisan Nasional won 140 seats out of 222 seats in this elections. They have extra 28 seats, from the 112 seats they needed to form the government. This government shouldn't be interpreted as a vulnerable government by any means.
Therefore, the opposition must not be too confident. Meanwhile, the ruling party need not sell itself short. Most importantly, in the face of democracy, they must accept magnanimously the fact that they have been defeated. This is in keeping with democratic convention.
After that, both sides must calm down and ponder on the future of the country and the people, as well as to fulfill election promises. In opposition should play its role to keep the government in check. People are worried about the demonstrations by UMNO members, who shouted racist slogans, at several opposition states and cause social instability. These low-IQ political acts are extremely dangerous.
A political party which has more than 50 years of governing experience should immediately and decisively stop these similar confrontations. They must use facts and actions to prove that they are a generous and highly self-disciplined political party.
“Leaders should not make trouble, and those who make troubles do not deserve to be leaders”. Not only the central government should listen, but every state government must also always keep this in mind. (By LIM MUN FAH/ Translated by LEE MEI NYEE/ Sin Chew Daily)
