KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: Wanita MCA chief Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen pointed out that it is time for United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) to wake up to face the fact that the Malay voters have began to support DAP in the 2008 general elections.
She believes that the New Economic Policy (NEP) can no longer ensure that the Malay voters will continue to support the Barisan Nasional (BN), as when the Malay community decides on who to vote for, they are actually give the same consideration on good governance, transparency and credibility of the government.
“Perhaps it is time for the reenactment of the NEP to benefit all the people. The world has changed, and the people do not want to wait too long.”
Ng pointed out on a general elections talks in Menara Star that Malaysia's politicians need to convey the voice of the people as well as to safeguard the interests of all the people, instead of a single ethnic.
Yayasan Strategik Sosial's Executive Director Datuk Dr Denison Jayasooria explained that even though many analysts said the Chinese and the Indian votes have caused such elections results, but if the Malays do not support the opposition, they wouldn't have such big victory.
He also pointed out that some Malays do not benefit from the NEP. He also think that it is necessary to restore local council elections to allow the people to elect the genuine representatives to serve them. The general elections results has also proved that racist politics is sharply on change. BN can no longer follow the old model.
DAP Seputeh member of parliament Teresa Kok pointed out that many Malay voters supported the opposition because they are dissatisfied with the inflation and the rising living expenses.
She said that the Malays hate corruption and clique. Meanwhile, non-Malays are discontent with the religious and ethnic issues.
“Since the current opposition is ruling in Selangor, Perak, Penang, Kedah and Kelantan, it is the time for BN to sit down and discuss with the opposition on how to create a better Malaysia.” (Sin Chew Daily)
