KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- The Merdeka Square is the venue for non-political gathering and non-chaotic activities, Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said.
Commenting on the 'Janji Bersih' gathering to be organised by 26 non-governmental organisations (NGO) on Aug 30, the minister said the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) need not to allow the gathering to be held at the Merdeka Square.
"The government has always given its permission for a gathering to be held there as long as it's not politically motivated because we practice democracy, but there should be a limit and the organisers must also adhere to the rules set by the authority."
He said this to reporters after opening the Special Message from Prime Minister programme in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya celebration.
The programme, which had entered its fourth year, is a personal initiative taken by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to deliver his special festive message to the people through greeting cards and video clips.
Nong Chik said all gatherings could only be held at the locations approved by the authority as stipulated under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
"They (organisers) can organise the gathering at any time, be it on Merdeka eve or Hari Raya eve, but the location must be designated by the authority," he said.
Earlier, Nong Chik also handed out Aidilfitri contributions to 149 recipients, comprising orphans, single mothers and persons with disabilities in Wangsa Maju here.
