KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 (Bernama) -- The High Court here today upheld the sentence against a police inspector found guilty of soliciting and receiving a bribe from a trader who employed foreign workers without permits, eight years ago.

Judge Kamardin Hashim rejected V. Vijayan's appeal to set aside the Jan 13, 2011 Sessions Court sentence of two years imprisonment and RM30,000 fine.

Kamardin concluded that the court found no merit in the appeal which was submitted by Vijayan's lawyer, P. Sutheswary.

Meanwhile, Joseph Christopher, representing businessman Anthony Michael Joseph, who faced the same charges informed the court his client was absent today due to health problems.

The court set Sept 4 for its decision on Anthony.

Vijayan, 32, who has been suspended, and Anthony, 43, were charged with soliciting and accepting RM3,000 from S.Ganeswaran in order to refrain from taking action over his employment of two foreign workers without permits in Aug 2004.

They were charged under the Anti Corruption Act 1997.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission deputy public prosecutor Saiful Hazmi Mohd Saad prosecuted.
