KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is to testify in his RM100-million suit against Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar over alleged defamatory words posted on websites, including Malaysiakini.com, by way of a video clip.
Anwar's counsel J. Leela told reporters the opposition leader and a reporter would be called to testify at the trial.
Leela said High Court Judge Datuk Hue Siew Kheng set Nov 14 and 20 to hear the suit after meeting her and counsel Faizal Faiz, representing Khairy, in chambers.
The judge also ordered the parties to file a summary of the case, lists of witnesses and issues to be tried, she said.
On March 7, 2008, Anwar filed the suit against Khairy claiming that the latter, as the then Umno Youth deputy chief, had uttered defamatory words and caused the posting on websites, including Malaysiakini.com, of a video clip entitled 'Anwar and Kin No Threat.'
Anwar is seeking RM100 million in aggravated and exemplary damages, as well as other relief deemed fit by the court.
Khairy, in his statement of defence filed on Oct 8, 2010, said he relied on the defence of justification and qualified privilege.
He said that as the Umno Youth deputy chief, he had legal, moral and social responsibilities to the public and the Malay community, and the public had valid interest which was equivalent in acceptance of information on matters during discussion which had an impact on social, economic and political welfare.
