KUALA LUMPUR, May 17 (Bernama) -- The second phase of the East Coast Expressway (LPT 2) from Ajil interchange to Telemung in Terengganu will be opened to traffic starting 10am tomorrow.
Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) director-general Datuk Ismail Md Salleh said the opening of the 21km stretch would allow motorists to experience an uninterrupted journey to Kuala Terengganu with a speed limit of 110kmph, non-stop.
"This will shorten the journey time from one hour 30 minutes to just 40 minutes," he said in a statement, today.
It will also reduce congestion at the Federal 14 road during peak hours as well as festive and school break seasons, he said.
Ismail said the stretch would also provide an alternative route for a more comfortable and faster journey as well as to generate income for the East Coast region.
The 184km LPT 2 project, which begins in Jabor, Kemaman, near here, to Kampung Gemuruh in northern Kuala Terengganu, is a continuation of the LPT Phase 1 from Karak to Kuantan, spanning 159 kilometres and construction work on the project had started in March 2006 at an estimated initial cost of RM3.7 billion.
