KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 10 (Bernama) -- Police investigations have yet to establish any link between the death of Master Builders Association of Malaysia former president Datuk Patrick Wong Kie Yik and the alleged sand-mining scandal in Selangor, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Khalid Abu Bakar said today.
As such, he requested blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin, who claimed that Wong died at the hands of hired killers and not robbers, to facilitate their investigation by presenting evidence to support such a claim.
"So far, investigations have not linked the death to the Selangor sand-mining issue," he said when commenting on Raja Petra's article "Episode 2: The Murder of a Whistleblower" posted on Malaysia Today.
Khalid revealed however that police have detained a suspect, believed to be involved in the armed robbery at Wong's residence in Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar, on Nov 19, 2009, which led to him falling to his death.
Speaking after a 'Maulidur Rasul' gathering at Bukit Aman here today, he said the suspect was now at the Simpang Renggam Detention Centre in Johor for the robbery but there was insufficient evidence to charge him in court.
"We're still tracing two other suspects involved in the robbery," he said.
In the article, Raja Petra had raised questions on Wong's death, alleging that the businessman had been gathering evidence on the sand-mining issue in Selangor for several years before his demise.
Yesterday, Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin said Wong's case had been classified as murder right from the start.
"If there is any new information which can show the link, then let us have it and we're prepared to investigate," said Khalid.
He added that it was unreasonable for certain parties to make allegations based on assumptions as it hampered their investigations and police needed solid evidence to support such a charge.
