Hilmi will not be extradited as yet

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 10 (Bernama) -- There are no plans to extradite a Malaysian, currently under Indonesian police custody, to facilitate investigations in connection with the leaked semi-nude photographs of Selangor Exco member Elizabeth Wong.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Khalid Abu Bakar noted that Hilmi Hazimin Malek, 37, needed to first face a charge under Indonesia's immigration laws.

"We have yet to receive a full report from the Indonesian police, but there is a possibility that Hilmi will be charged and sentenced there.

"The Malaysian police can only take action against him after that," he told reporters after attending Maulidur Rasul celebrations at the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman here today.

The scandal involving Wong's semi-nude pictures broke out in early 2009, before Hilmi fled the country.

Last Saturday, an Indonesian-based web portal reported that a Malaysian, initially identified only as 'Azmin Helmi', and later verified as Hilmi Hazimin, was detained by immigration personnel in Pulau Batam, Indonesia, for possession of forged identification and travel documents.

Meanwhile, Khalid refuted the involvement of two policemen, including a superintendent, in an alleged abuse of power case over the issuance of tender for renovation of the Royal Malaysian Police museum.

In fact, he said, the police had received a report that "outsiders" were involved in the case.

"We received a report last year from a victim who was promised the tender," he said, adding that investigations were ongoing to track down the mastermind.

A local newspaper had reported today that two policemen attached to the museum were under investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in connection with the case.
