Rais ready to accept PAS Youth memo on Valentine's Day

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 (Bernama) -- Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said today he is ready to accept the memorandum from PAS Youth on Valentine's Day.

Federal Territory PAS Youth was reported to be wanting to hand over the memorandum to Rais tomorrow to protest against what it described as a widespread media promotion of Valentine's Day events.

Rais pointed out, however, that Malaysia is a multiracial country and that all parties should respect the cultural practices of one another.

"But we are prepared to receive (the memorandum)," he told reporters after declaring open the Personal Data Protection Awareness Seminar and launching the Personal Data Protection Department of Malaysia, here.

When asked to comment on Thailand's support for the censorship policy introduced by micro-blogging site Twitter, Rais said the ministry should look at the matter in an objective manner.

It was reported that Twitter would allow country-specific censorship of content which it deems violate local laws.

Rais said, "If there is a development in Malaysia which is seen to be undermining public order or against civil liberties, we will look into it and do a comparative study."

"We will look also from the legal point of view as well as in the interest of communications among the people."
