Sultan Muhammad V, the people's ruler

KOTA BAHARU, Dec 12 (Bernama) -- The Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V, who has been appointed as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuang Agong, is a ruler with a common touch and close to the Kelantan people's hearts.

The eldest son of Sultan Ismail Petra, who was previously known as Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra, 42, used the name Sultan Muhammad V after his installation as the 29th Sultan of Kelantan on Sept 13, 2010.

Sultan Muhammad V, who refers to himself as 'kita' or 'we', loves going down on the ground, including rural areas and Orang Asli settlements in Gua Musang and Jeli.

Since he was installed as the Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan on Oct 6, 1985, he preferred to don a 'jubah' or 'baju melayu' with a 'kain pelikat' (sarong cloth) which is known as the 'gumbang', and a white skullcap when making visits to his subjects.

Sultan Muhammad V also shows extreme ease when mingling with villagers in the state, demonstrating sincere concern for their welfare and extending assistance to those in need without making a fuss of it for the media.

Born on Oct 6, 1969, Sultan Muhammad V received his early eduction at Sekolah Sultan Ismail I in Kota Baharu before continuing his studies at the Alice Smith International School, Kuala Lumpur.

He was then enrolled in the Oakham School Rutland, England until 1989 before pursuing diplomatic studies at the St. Cross College, Oxford and the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies until 1991.

Sultan Muhammad V, who is Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) Chancellor, fills his free time by reading and has an interest in extreme sports such as four-wheel drive expeditions and endurance challenges.

He also enjoys archery and bowling as well as taking care of beloved pets including horses, cats, chicken and birds.

Sultan Muhammad V was also appointed as Commander of the 506 Territorial Army Regiment with the rank of Brigadier-General (Honorary) and is actively involved with various non-governmental organisations and those related to security and the military.

He has three younger siblings who are Tengku Mahkota Kelantan Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra, 37, Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra, 33, and Tengku Amalin A'lshah Putri, 27.
