Women taxi service begins operation

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- Women, especially those using taxi service, can now breathe a sigh of relief, and feel safer with the launch of the "Women Taxi" service today.

Deputy Family, Women and Community Development Minister Heng Seai Kei said the project, carried out with the collaboration of ABEX Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (ABEX), would involve an all-women taxi drivers who would operate on "on-call" basis.

"So far, we have 50 women taxi drivers. Our target is to have 400 taxis for women in the Klang Valley," she told a media conference after launching the taxi service in conjunction with the International Day of Violence Against Women at the Bandar Tasik Selatan Integrated Transport Terminal here today.

She said currently, the women taxi service were provided by three companies, namely, Destination Transport, Zalnas Sdn Bhd and Koperasi Pengangkutan Putrajaya dan Cyberjaya.

She said the women taxi service would have a special sticker, written "Teksi Wanita" on the vehicle.

Heng said women keen to be taxi drivers should contact ABEX for further information.

"This project indirectly creates employment opportunities for women to increase their household income," she added.

On violence against women, Heng said an average of 10 women a day became victims of such acts daily in the country.

Sixty per cent of "survivors" of domestic violence suffers from serious depression with a tendency to commit suicide, she added.
