KUCHING, Friday 18 February 2011 (Bernama) -- Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof announced here today that the Kerdau by-election would be held simultaneously with the Merlimau by-election in Melaka.
The nomination day is Feb 26 and polling on March 6. Abdul Aziz said the EC would need RM915,000 to hold the Kerdau by-election which is called following the death of the incumbent Datuk Zaharuddin Abu Kassim of the Barisan Nasional on Feb 12.
"We save a lot of time and money by having both by-elections simultaneously and the EC does not have to be split into two places," he told a press conference here.
He said 242 election staffers would be appointed to run the Kerdau by-election and that the EC would use 10 schools, two small halls and a big hall as polling centres, altogether having 22 polling streams.
Kerdau has an electorate of 8,999 including 15 postal voters.
Abdul Aziz said the latest electoral roll for the Kerdau constituency would be put on sale on Feb 22 and that voters could check information on where to vote at the EC's website at www.spr.gov.my and through SMS.
Voters can also call the EC's headquarters in Putrajaya at 03-8885 6500 or the EC's Pahang office at 09-5165025 for assistance.
In the general election in 2008, Zaharuddin polled 4,135 votes to beat Hassanuddin Salim of PAS by a 1,615-vote majority.
