South Korean missing after Philippine boat trip: police

MANILA, Thursday 23 December 2010 (AFP) - A South Korean man has gone missing during a solo boat trip off a small southern Philippine island, local police said Thursday.

Police have recovered a rented dinghy which contained some of the missing man's effects, including a driver's licence identifying him as South Korean, said a police report to the national headquarters in Manila.

It said the man, who was travelling alone, rented the dinghy Sunday on Siargao, a small island off the northeast coast of the main southern island of Mindanao, for a boating trip to Guyam, which is even smaller.

His Siargao contact, a fisherman, decided to follow him when the foreigner failed to return the following day, but all he found was the dinghy adrift between the two islands with no one on board.

South Korean embassy spokesmen in Manila could not be reached for comment on Thursday.
