Sarawak DAP chairman picked to contest Sibu seat

SIBU, April 27 (Bernama) -- As expected, state DAP chairman Wong Ho Leng has been chosen by the Sarawak opposition pact to contest in the Sibu by-election.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng made the announcement at a dinner here which was attended by leaders of the four parties in the opposition pact.

They included PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustapha Ali, Sarawak National Party (SNAP) deputy chairman Johhny Wong Sie Lee, state PKR deputy chairman Wan Zainal Abidin Wan Senusi and DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang.

Also present was its by-election campaign director Chong Chieng Jen, who is Bandar Kuching member of parliament.

Wong, 50, a lawyer, is also Bukit Assek assemblyman.

He will face Sarawak United People's Party candidate Robert Lau Hui Yew, who is representing Barisan Nasional.

The Election Commission has fixed May 8 for nomination of candidates and May 16 for polling.

The seat fell vacant following the death of its five-term incumbent MP Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew, the deputy transport minister, on April 9 from liver cancer.
