MIC wants NEM to have monitoring mechanism

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 (Bernama) -- The MIC wants the government to create a monitoring mechanism to ensure success of the delivery system under the New Economic Model (NEM) and the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP), which will be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the end of the month.

Party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the mechanism would ensure the realisation of all policies and initiatives for the Indian community within the stipulated time frame, especially that of the 10MP.

"We will discuss the matter further with the Economic Planning Unit," he told reporters after chairing the MIC Central Working Committee meeting at the party headquarters here today.

He said, he would be leading a delegation to meet Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop tomorrow to discuss the proposed mechanism and the party's proposals for inclusion in the 10MP.

The MIC has outlined six key areas for the government to concentrate for the development of the Indian community. They are the development of Tamil schools; youth; family and community; micro-entreprise; economic and equity; and delivery and monitoring capacity.

On Tamil school development, Samy Vellu urged the government to set up pre-schools at all schools.

He said Indian youths should be offered more skills training opportunities while making entrepreneurial training and business loans available to them.

Meanwhile, he announced appointments to the various party sub-committees, including education to be headed by Datuk Dr T. Marimuthu.
