Student drowns while bathing in Perak river

KUALA KANGSAR, March 15 (Bernama) -- The body of a student who was reported missing while bathing in the Perak river near Kampung Bekor, Manong, here yesterday, was found today.

Kuala Kangsar police chief Supt Abdul Ghafar Mohamad said the rescue team found the body of Muhammad Addy Khairuddin Maidin, a fourth former of Sekolah Menengah Perimbun, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, at 10.20am, about 500 metres from where he was last seen bathing.

The body was taken to Kuala Kangsar Hospital for post-mortem, he told reporters here today.

Abdul Ghaffar said Mohd Addy Khairuddin, 16, from Kajang, Selangor, was said to have followed his family to spend his school holidays in Kampung Bekor.

He was bathing in the river with his two friends when he was suddenly washed away by strong current and disappeared underwater.

His friends, who escaped unhurt, alerted the police after they failed to find him and a searc h was mounted.

Meanwhile, in BERA, Pahang the body of Affandi Mohammad Noor, 20, who also went missing while bathing in the Pahang river near Kampung Batu Papan yesterday, was also found.

Bera police chief DSP Mohd Zahid Mohd Noor said Affandi went for a swim in the river with four friends after attending a wedding reception in Bukit Serdang.

"When all his friends had finished bathing, he stayed in the water. It was not long before his friends realised that he had disappeared underwater," he said.

His body was found about 30m from the scene four hours later by a search and rescue operation mounted by the police, firemen and villagers.
