Settle traffic tickets within 30 days or...

PUTRAJAYA: Under the automatic enforcement system (AES), violators of traffic regulations will be given 30 days to pay up their traffic summons tickets, failing which their cases will be automatically referred to the court for further actions, resulting in the violators having to pay fines of not lower than RM1,000.

JPJ director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan told Sin Chew Daily, the AES would be implemented in conjunction with the point deduction system, whereby the violators' points would be deducted in accordance with their traffic offences, and their driving licences would be suspended if 15 points had been deducted.

He said the authorities would also restrict the renewal of the violators' driving licences based on their offences.

Solah said once a motorist had been blacklisted, he or she would not be able to renew his/her licence, road tax or conduct any vehicle transaction.

He emphasised that the authorities would not provide any discount for traffic summonses, and only those paying up within the first 15 days would be entitled to 30% discounts.

He said the amended road transport act would be deliberated in the Parliament in March, and if passed, the AES would be implemented in stages throughout the country within 18 months.

He said the maximum fines for seven major offences would remain at RM300, but if the cases were to be referred to the court, the fines would not be lower than RM1,000.

He also said under the AES, electronic court (paperless court system) would be put to implementation, and all particulars would be electronically transmitted to the court for speedy settlement of traffic offences. (Translated by DOMINIC LOH/Sin Chew Daily)
