20 percent of companies did not contribute to Socso in 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- About 20 percent of companies and statutory bodies did not contribute to the Social Security Organisation (Socso) in 2009, chief executive K. Selvarajah said.

He urged errant employers to contribute to prevent them from being charged in court and fined RM10,000 or two years' jail under the Employees' Social Security Act.

Speaking to reporters after presenting a cheque for RM1,500 for funeral arrangement of Tan Chun Kee here today, he said Tan's parents would receive RM524.70 monthly from the Penakat pension scheme.

Tan, 25, a credit card telesales officer at HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad died of stab wounds in the chest in Kuala Lumpur Hospital on Jan 9 last year.

Selvarajah said 158,132 people had received Penakat pension benefits in 2009 (until Nov) involving an allocation of RM410 million.

In 2008, Socso paid out RM399 million to 145,178 people under Penakat, a pension scheme to help heirs of employees whose deaths were not work related.
