KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is going to visit the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (FeCAM) as it hopes to listen to the Chinese community's views on the commission through communications, says MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Abu Kassim Mohammed.
"From a Sin Chew Daily report, I got to know that FeCAM President Tan Sri Pheng Yin Huah had recently expressed his views on the issue of barring the media from reporting fresh reports or on-going investigations. I hope to meet him and other FeCAM leaders to explain to them the intention of implementing the measures," said Abu Kassim.
He said: "As I have said earlier during an interview with Sin Chew Daily, MACC is not trying to hide anything. However, when a corruption report is made, we need to secretly collect evidence and documents in order to avoid arousing the suspect's suspicious and giving them an opportunity to eliminate evidence."
Abu Kassim told Sin Chew Daily that: "I am not going to ask FeCAM leaders to come and see me, but I will pay them a visit to communicate with Chinese entrepreneurs and leaders."
He attached great importance to the Chinese community's views on corruption and hoped to listen to their views and at the same time, collect their feedback and information through communication.
"To me, opinions from the Chinese community and entrepreneurs are very important. I want to curb corruption together with the Chinese community. Therefore, I hope to meet them to understand their views and expectations," he said.
"I know the public's expectations on MACC, thus I hope to meet their expectations through real actions," he added.
When being asked about when would he meet FeCAM leaders, Abu Kassim said that he will try to make arrangement.
Meanwhile, Pheng said that as Abu Kassim has took the initiative to ask for a meeting, it showed that Abu Kassim is sincere in his attempt to make the Chinese community and entrepreneurs understand the practices of MACC.
He agreed that communication is the best way to enhance understanding.
"We hope to learn more about the practices of MACC and at the same time, we will tell the commission our views on various issues," said Pheng.
He said that since the MACC is sincere, he does not mind who takes the initiative. As long as they can sit down and communicate, it can sure enhance mutual understanding.
Pheng also pointed out that the secretariat of FeCAM may also approach the MACC to arrange the meeting. (By HWN YAUL LEN/Translated by SOONG PHUI JEE/Sin Chew Daily)
