Malaysian media reports well on Malaysia-Indonesia issues

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 22 (Bernama) -- Although certain quarters try to sensationalise several issues that crop up between Malaysia dan Indonesia, the media in this country report well on the issues, said Deputy Foreign Minister Senator A. Kohilan Pillay.

He said the Malaysian media did not follow the Indonesian media's rhythm in its reporting of small issues like the 'Pendet' dance.

"Congratulations to the Malaysian media for doing its job well compared to the Indonesian media," he said in the Dewan Negara here today when replying to a question by Senator Muhamad Yusof Husin on whether the government proposed to set up a special committee for both countries to resolve issues.

Kohilan said both countries had set up the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) last year besides having visits by leaders to that country to strengthen ties.

However, he said, besides those efforts, the media continues to play an important role to reduce problems.

Answering a question by Senator Abdul Rahman Bakar about current government efforts to enhance close ties between Malaysia dan Indonesia, Kohilan said the ministry would continue with the best formula to find effective strategies and alternatives.

"In this matter the official diplomatic channels like annual consultations, the Joint Commission meetings, the Socio-Economic Committee meetings and Joint Border Committee meetings are used to find resolutions to issues," he said.

Kohilan said the ministry also liaised with the Malaysian representative offices in Indonesia and non-governmental organisations to have social and cultural programmes and it also sought the views and suggestions of ministers, eminent personalities and members of parliament.
