Islamic NGOs urged to play pressure group role

KUALA TERENGGANU, Dec 19 (Bernama) -- Islamic non-governmental organisations (NGOs) need to be more brave in playing the role of pressure groups to help the government solve problems concerning the religion, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom.

He said it was time for the NGOs to actively fight for the interests of Mulisms in Malaysia, regardless of the different names and logos carried by each organisation.

"As a country with a democratic political system, pressure groups are another political element that can influence a nation's political scenario.

"As such, NGOs need to act as pressure groups that are organised, strategic, and proactive," he said at the opening of the East Coast of Malaysia Islamic Charity Council (MAIM) congress, here today.

The text of his speech was read out by Islamic Da'wah Foundation (YADIM) Administration and Finance general manager, Dr Abdul Ghani Mohammad. The congress saw the participation of over 20 NGOs from Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu.
