KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 (Bernama) -- MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha is delighted that the extraordinary general meeting (EGM), slated for tomorrow, has been called off.

The housing and local government minister, however said that he would not be attending the special briefing at Wisma MCA as he would be in Sarawak over the weekend for an official visit.

Yesterday, Wong Nai Chee, the key requisionist for the EGM pushed by vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai's faction, had announced that the EGM was replaced with a special briefing for the delegates after reaching a consensus with the party's top two leaders on a fresh election for the Central Committee (CC).

Speaking to reporters after opening the Star Property Fair Kuala Lumpur here today, Kong said there was nothing extraordinary about the proposed briefing as MCA had been holding briefings, from time to time, to update its grassroots leaders on the party's latest developments.

He said it was the delegates's right, whether to attend such a briefing or not.

Kong also urged that any conduct of a fresh poll for the MCA's CC, be held in accordance with the party's constitution.

"I hope that everything is referred to the constitution," he said.

He declined to comment on when a fresh election would be carried out to solve the conflict among the party's top leaders.

According to the MCA constitution, a fresh election could be called, either when a term of office has expired or when two-thirds of its CC members resign.

The country's largest Chinese political party held its election on Oct 18, last year.
