BESUT, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- A total of 140 students and lecturers from the Kota Baharu Polytechnic in Kelantan on a camping trip in the Lata Belatan recreational area at the foothills of the Tebu Mountain, near Jabi, was left stranded when the road leading out of the camp was flooded early this morning.
The group, which had arrived on Thursday, was unable to leave on two buses after the road between Kampung Kuala Kubang and the recreational area was under 0.6m to 1.5m of water at several places.
Besut deputy police chief DSP Roslan Hassan confirmed the incident.
He said police were not informed of the trip and were trying to get further information on the matter.
The Civil Defence Department and the Fire and Rescue Department in Jerteh had started operations to bring back the group.
Meanwhile, residents in Besut are preparing for a second wave of floods following heavy rain for the past two days which left villages near Sungai Besut with rising waters.
As at 10am, the level at Sungai Kampung La was recorded at 18.31m, which is above the alert level of 17.20m (danger level 19.20m).
Meanwhile, the reading of Sungai Besut at Jambatan Keruak was 32.19m, only 0.81 metre below the alert lever while that at Jabatan Jertah was 5.42m, which is 1.88 metres below the alert level.
However, according to the the Flood Operations Room at the Besut police headquarters, no one had been evacuated.
The floods, which hit the district two weeks ago, caused 1,000 evacuees to be relocated to relief centres, especially those from villages in Hulu Besut.
