WASHINGTON, Nov 20 (AFP) - President Barack Obama will wait until after Americans mark Thanksgiving on November 26 to announce whether or not to he will send reinforcements to Afghanistan, his spokesman Robert Gibbs said Friday.
Asked whether Obama would wait until after the annual holiday next week to make his announcement, Gibbs said yes.
Obama had earlier indicated he would end months of deliberations over the possible deployment of thousands more troops to Afghanistan "in the coming weeks."
The president has been under sustained attack from Republican foes who charge his "dithering" has put the mission and currently deployed troops at risk.
Obama has held a series of meeting with top advisers to discuss the campaign in Afghanistan, in an effort to define US aims and how to achieve them.
Gibbs did not say when Obama might hold another meeting with his advisers.
