KOTA BAHARU, Nov 16 (Bernama) -- At a time when sponsored Haj pilgrimage trips have stirred up a controversy, Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has announced he is ready to accept sponsorship to perform the Haj next year.
The PAS spiritual leader said he would perform the Haj in the next season with or without sponsorship after having cancelled a sponsored trip this year.
He spoke at a prayer session in conjunction with the 19-year administration of PAS in Kelantan, here last night.
Last Tuesday, Nik Abdul Aziz was reported to have acknowledged having been offered sponsorship of a Haj pilgrimage trip at a cost of RM65,000 with VVIP treatment.
Following that statement, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) opened a probe into the matter, and Nik Abdul Aziz cancelled his plan to go to Mecca on Nov 18.
Yesterday, Kelantan Umno Youth handed over a memorandum to the MACC urging for the investigation to go on and asked Nik Abdul Aziz to step down as the menteri besar.
Meanwhile, Kelantan PAS commissioner II Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah said the Kelantan menteri besar cancelled his plan to perform the Haj this year after the sponsorship issue was politicised.
