Crash robs teen of second marriage on wedding day

KUANTAN, Nov 12 (Bernama) -- For teenager K. Kanmany, wedded bliss was sadly, not meant to be.

The 19-year-old was previously married to an Indonesian immigrant who fled the country after the birth of their son.

Subsequently, Kanmany agreed to a second marriage when she received a proposal from a 45-year-old widower.

This morning, the teenager, resplendent in her bridal attire, was travelling in a car, together with one-year-old son Sangkaran, brother K. Balamuralikrishnan, 29, wife B. Saratha, 25, the couple's sons, Hariharan, four, and Karthik, three, and cousin Kogilan, 18.

They were travelling from Kuantan to a temple in Gambang where the groom, heavy machinery operator K. Kuppusamy, was waiting to proceed with the wedding ceremony.

However, the bride-to-be never arrived.

Kanmani, Sangkaran, Balamuralikrishnan and Hariharan were killed on the spot when the Proton Iswara they were travelling in, collided with a stationary lorry parked on a road-shoulder.

Balamurlikrishnan's wife, B. Saratha, 25, was critically injured while their other son, Kartik, three, and cousin S. Kogilan, 18, sustained minor injuries.

The crash occured at the 17km stretch of Jalan Kuantan-Gambang here at 6.15am.

Kuantan police chief ACP Mohd Jasmani Yusoff said initial investigations revealed that the car skidded and crashed into the lorry.

Meanwhile, Kanmani's mother, T. Thamaravally, 52, said she was getting dressed at home in Kampung Bintang, Maran to attend her daughter's wedding when she heard the tragic news.

She instead, arrived at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) here, to see her daughter's body.

"My daughter was as happy as any bride could have been," the grieving mother told Bernama when met at the hospital.

Kuppusamy said he met his bride at Balamurlikrishnan's house after work yesterday evening, adding that she had looked forward to their honeymoon.

"On this much awaited day, while everyone was busy preparing (for the wedding), she is gone. While we are devastated, we must accept what's fated," he said.
