Bogus policeman detained for cheating woman of RM38,000

KOTA BAHARU, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- A man, who impersonated a police officer to cheat a woman, who had sought his help to secure the release of her husband from police custody, had been arrested.

Kelantan Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Hamzah Alias said the 31-year-old man was arrested at noon last Thursday after the woman lodged a report that she was cheated of RM38,000.

He said the woman had sought the help of the man, who impersonated a police officer with the rank of inspector from Bukit Aman to secure the release of her husband who was detained under the Poisons Act 1952 since August.

The woman realised that she was cheated after her husband was still under detention despite having deposited RM38,000 in eight accounts belonging to the suspect's friends from Sept 9 to Oct 17, Hamzah told reporters here today.

The woman lodged the report at the Tanah Merah police district headquarters.

He said the suspect's friends were not arrested as they did not know why the suspect had asked for their account numbers.

Hamzah said the suspect had been remanded to assist probe into the cheating case while the woman's husband would be investigated for possession of unscheduled drugs.
