KAMPAR, Perak: 22 primary school students participating in the 1Malaysia motivation camp met an accident at about 10 p.m. Monday night when a newly built suspension bridge they were crossing suddenly collapsed, and they were swept away by the swift current.

19 victims were later rescued, an Indian girl drowned and two others still missing.

The mishap took place about 7 miles from the town of Kampar and 22 miles from Ipoh.

Some 294 students from 64 primary schools in Kinta Selatan district took part in the motivation camp which started on Monday afternoon.

The drowned and missing victims were all Indian female students. The body of N. Dina Deve, 11, from SJK (T) Mambang Diawan, was found Tuesday morning at 8.40 a.m. about 6km from the site of collapsed bridge.

As of press time, the other two missing girls have yet to be found.

The four-day three-night motivation camp began Monday and is scheduled to end on Thursday.

Some of the participants were accommodated at the classrooms of a primary school on one side of the river while the others were camping on the grassland across the river.

It is understood that when the students finished their supper Monday night and began to cross the suspension bridge to their camps across the river, the newly constructed bridge suddenly collapsed and the students walking on it were swept away by the swift current.

The students were supposed to cross the bridge in batches, but because they rushed towards the bridge after the supper, the bridge became overloaded and gave way. (Translated by DOMINIC LOH/Sin Chew Daily)
