KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- The Barisan Nasional's by-election victory in Bagan Pinang will be debated during a motion of thanks for the presidential policy speech on the final day of the UMNO General Assembly 2009 on Friday.
UMNO Deputy President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said this was because the victory could spur the party's transformation process.
"The change has begun and the Bagan Pinang's victory will be deliberated and factors that led to our achievement will be studied," he told reporters after attending a briefing by UMNO Constitutional Amendment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein here today.
Muhyiddin said the by-election victory over the weekend was a testimony of the support of all races, especially the Chinese and Indian voters, to the country's leadership.
"While savouring the victory, we should be mindful and conscious and not consumed by it. We strive to make the changes not only to fulfill the demands of the Malays but also that of the whole of the Malaysian community.
"This should be reflected by the debaters at the general assembly," he said.
Muhyiddin, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, said all state UMNO spokesmen should give ideas on how the change and transformation could be carried out in line with the direction set by UMNO President Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
"We should pay attention to the message in the presidential policy speech on politics and the administration," he said, adding that the general assembly was a historic event as it would be the first for Najib and him as UMNO president and deputy president respectively.
On the proposed constitutional amendments, which will be tabled on Thursday, Muhyiddin said the amendments would have a far-reaching implications as more candidates would be able to vie for posts and more members would be involved in the elections.
"It will have a multiplier effect to UMNO members and the Malays as promised by the president at the last general assembly," he added.
