Bagan Pinang by-election result as early as 8pm

PORT DICKSON, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- The result of the Bagan Pinang by-election is expected to be known as early as 8pm Sunday, said Election Commission (EC)chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof.

"If all goes well, we should be able to know the result between 7.15pm and 7.30pm. But it's better we announce it after the Maghrib (evening) prayers at 8pm when the supporters of both parties will be present," he told reporters after visiting polling centres in Ladang Sua Betong here Saturday.

He said eight polling centres with 18 polling streams had been made available to allow the 9,060 normal voters in Bagan Pinang to exercise their responsibility to pick their elected representative.

There 4,604 postal voters in the constituency. Thursday and Friday had been allocated for them to cast their votes.

As rain was forecast in the constituency Sunday, Abdul Aziz urged voters to come to vote early and that voting would be closed at 5pm.

He added that overall he was happy with the campaigning by the contesting parties and urged voters to come out in full force and vote without any worries as the police had the security situation well under control.

The Bagan Pinang by-election is a straight fight between Tan Sri Mohd Isa Samad of the Barisan Nasional and Zulkefly Omar of PAS. The by-election has been necessitated by the death of state assemblyman, Azman Mohd Noor of the BN, on Sept 4.
