1,303 still being treated for flu-like illnesses

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 6 (Bernama) -- A total of 1,303 patients are being treated at hospitals throughout the country for having symptoms of influenza-like illnesses.

Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said of the total, only 332 patients or 25.5 percent were confirmed positive of the H1N1 including 52 cases who were being treated at the intensive care units (ICU).

"Of the 52 cases being treated at the ICU, 16 cases have chronic disease risks, nine cases involve children under five years old, nine are obese, one case involves a pregnant woman, one is an elderly patient and one patient suffers respiratory problem," he said in a statement here today.

There was no death due to the influenza A(H1N1) infection recorded today, with the death toll remaining unchanged at 73 cases, he said.

Dr Mohd Ismail said the Health Ministry only received 10 telephone calls through the hotline and seven e-mails enquiring about the disease.
