KUALA KRAI: Police arrested a PAS supporter believed to be involved in the stone-throwing incident which injured two Puteri UMNO members at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Peria polling station here.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said the incident took place at about noon when supporters of both parties were gathering at the polling station, with PAS supporters taunting the other group.
"This caused quarrel among them that led to the stone-throwing incident. One of the stones hit a Puteri Umno member on the hip causing it to swell while another member broke her teeth in the incident," he told a news conference in Laloh, near here.
Police arrested the man, who is a PAS supporter, at the scene and are investigating the matter under the Section 323 of the Penal Code for causing hurt.
He said the victims had been sent to Kuala Krai Hospital and that police reports had been lodged.
Commenting on the large party flags placed by PAS supporters on their vehicles, Musa said he had instructed Kelantan police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi to take action as it could endanger other road users.
They were also putting themselves to risk as the flags could obstruct the drivers' view, he said.
"It could also create provocation which could lead to untoward incidents," he said.
Overall, Musa said, the polling proceeded smoothly.
Meanwhile, commenting on the stone-throwing incident, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the action of PAS supporters was regrettable.
Muhyiddin also slammed PAS supporters for not adhering to the Election Commission's instruction not to place flags on their vehicles.
He added that Barisan Nasional (BN) had been adhering to this regulation.
"I hope the EC will take action to ensure safety," he said. (Bernama)
