12-year-old becomes Brunei 1st swine flu fatality

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Brunei (AP): Brunei's health ministry has confirmed the country's first swine flu-related death--a 12-year-old girl with a liver ailment who tested positive for the H1N1 virus.

The ministry says it is the only fatality so far among 93 swine flu patients recorded in this tiny sultanate on Borneo island.

The ministry said in a statement that the girl had been in critical condition since June 26 due to liver failure, hepatitis and pneumonia.

Officials were still investigating how she was got swine flu. It was believed that the infection caused her condition to worsen and led to her death Thursday. (The Associated Press)
