Jackie Chan’s Remarks

  • 2204091n.jpg

Whenever Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan makes serious remarks, it will either be funny or scary.

This time, he said: “If you're too free, you're like the way Hong Kong is now. It's very chaotic. Taiwan is also chaotic. I'm gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled.”

Some people from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan called it the “奴才言論” (minion’s remarks). However, some also thought he is absolutely right.

I believe that some people in Malaysia’s Chinese community agree with Chan’s remarks and some do not.

Just like today’s situation in Malaysia, some said that the situation is chaotic as we are too free. On the other hand, some said that the situation is chaotic as we are lack of freedom.

"The process of democratic politics can only be on the right track after going through constant comparisons, competitions and tests."

What do you think then?

Jackie Chan is not highly educated, but he is one of the “successful” people in the society. Thus, his views represent the very superficial impression of the vested interest group on the current social situation.

Similarly, when we talk about the nation’s politics with a Malaysian businessman, who makes money during the day and goes drinking at night, he may say: “Malaysia is too free, that’s why it is chaotic. It is best to get all of them arrested, so the country will be at peace.”

It is a reasonable argument that people are afraid of chaos; but many do not understand that chaos, in fact, is a process that must be gone through for social progress.

How can a baby learn speaking if he does not go through the prattle stage; how can a child learn walking if he does not staggering along?

The process of democratic politics can only be on the right track after going through constant comparisons, competitions and tests.

In order to transit to a genuine democratic society, we must have a certain degree of freedom of rights. For example, the right of expression, the right to vote, the right to choose languages, religions and thoughts, we must not deny all these freedom of rights because we are afraid of chaos.

It is chaotic because of poor management, ineffective rule of law and no compliance with the rules of democracy. Chaos is really imminent only if we give up the freedom of rights and are dominated by the government and politicians just because we are afraid of chaos.

Today, Westerners who are living in democratic societies will never say freedom is bad and neither will they think chaos is caused by freedom. It is because they have overcome the chaos at the initial stage of democracy. From the chaos, they have found civilisation and order, and they have started a system.

Chan can fool Westerners around with his nimble skills and beat all foreigners with martial arts in films. But in terms of ideology, he has lowered himself by believing that Chinese people know nothing about democracy, and they are not deserved of freedom. Thus, they must be more stringently controlled.

No wonder, the greater the age, the more I feel he is pathetic when I watch his films. (By TAY TIAN YAN/ Translated by SOONG PHUI JEE/ Sin Chew Daily)
