NEW ORLEANS, UNITED STATES: A 41-year-old son of Viet Nam War refugees became the first Vietnamese-American elected to US Congress.

Joe Cao, an immigration attorney and a Republican moderate, said he did not have a long list of policy beliefs, and is open to everything but one major issue. “The only thing I am certain of is that I am anti-abortion,” he said, after defeating Democrat William Jefferson in New Orleans.

Cao ended a 30-year stand for Jefferson, who has been dogged by corruption allegations. (ANN/ AsiaNews)
