Wolf: No Change In U.S. Foreign Policy After Presidential Election

KUALA LUMPUR: A former U.S. diplomat to Malaysia says the American foreign policy will not be totally reversed after the 4 Nov presidential election but there could be a substantial change in Washington's administration style.

"There have been things that have been long-standing tenets of the U.S. foreign policy but the way we approach foreign policy issues might change," said John Wolf who served as Ambassador to Malaysia from 1992-1995.

Wolf, who is now President of Eisenhower Fellowships, said: "It might change more under (Democrat presidential candidate) Barack Obama than under (Republican presidential hopeful) John McCain.

"But I think inadvertedly, on some issues, it would change dramatically on the issue of approaches," he told Bernama in an interview here Friday (17 Oct).

Wolf, who was once U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Non-Proliferation and Ambassador to Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), said: "I am deeply hurt by what I read about the way in which the Bush administration responded on the issue of treatment of people arrested under capture."
