ISA Release Raises More Questions

The release of Sin Chew senior reporter Tan Hoon Cheng has raise more questions. MCA VP Ong Tee Keat who is also Transport Minister, is one of the many who are asking questions over her controversial arrests.

"The release of Sin Chew Daily senior reporter Tan Hoon Cheng has brought much relief to all. But there are a few unanswered questions over her ISA detention, which is the shortest ever, he points out in his blog.

"Why was her detention done in such a haphazard manner, with so much drama and twists? Was a proper inquiry conducted prior to the arrest? Were existing procedures followed?"

Ong went on to say the Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar has said that the decision to arrest Hoon Cheng was not made by him. If not him then who and based on what? Is her detention a form of protection? If so, why was it offered to her for only 18 hours? Would the same protection be extended to others? And since when did ISA serve that purpose?

"If the reporter had been detained erroneously, would the authorities seek to expunge her ISA detention record? I think the authorities should if a mistake had been made because being an ex-ISA detainee carries a stigma, being grossly unfair to her", he asked. (MySinchew)
