Noh Omar expelled from Dewan Rakyat for 3 days

  • Tanjung Karang MP Tan Sri Noh Omar has been expelled from the Dewan Rakyat for three days from today.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 (Bernama) -- Tanjung Karang MP Tan Sri Noh Omar has been expelled from the Dewan Rakyat for three days from today.

Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Nga Kor Ming said the order was issued under Standing Order 43 and 44 after Noh yesterday, among others, accused the Chair of being unqualified to hold the position.

"As the Speaker, my duty is not just to chair the proceedings with fairness and trust. The responsibility demands that I safeguard and uphold the image and integrity of the institution of Parliament.

"As Tanjung Karang (Noh of Barisan Nasional (BN)) has acted without decency and deliberately insulted the meeting and disregarded the authority of the Chair by accusing the Chair of being unqualified to hold the position. This is an open insult to the Chair and the House.

"I hereby order Tanjung Karang out of the House for three days,¡¨ he said, issuing the order before the start of the Ministers' Question Time.

Nga advised Noh and other MPs to take this as a lesson and not repeat such demeanour and to maintain discipline in the House.

Kuala Krau MP Datuk Seri Ismail Mohamed Said of BN asked for the order to be read out when Noh is in the Dewan Rakyat to give the MP the opportunity to defend himself.

Ismail suggested that if Noh refused to apologise over his remarks, then Nga's order of expulsion should be enforced. He was supported by Pontian MP Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, also of BN.

However, Nga stressed that it is the responsibility of all MPs to be in the House when the Dewan Rakyat is in session.

After repeatedly asking Nga in vain to consider his suggestion, Ismail asked to leave the House when Nga is in the chair. The other opposition MPs also followed Ismail out of the House.
