Mohd Zawawi is PKR's candidate for Sg Kandis

SHAH ALAM, July 19 (Bernama) -- Six years ago, Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni submitted his Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) membership form to party de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Padang Rakyat Jalan Kebun here during the 13th General Election campaigning period and today, symbolically, at the same place, he was announced as PKR's candidate for the Sungai Kandis by-election.

His stature as the principal of the Maahad Tahfiz Al Fateh in Jalan Kebun, as well as extensive experience in politics, volunteerism and leadership at national and international level, has made 47-year-old the best candidate to defend the state seat won by PKR since the 12th general election in 2008.

Born on Sept. 20, 1970, Mohd Zawawi, who holds a Masters of Education (Guidance and Counselling) from the University of Malaya and a Bachelors (Arabic Language) degree from Al Azhar University, Egypt, is married to Hazlina Abdul Razak, 48. They have five boys aged between 23 and seven years.

He had been actively involved in Anwar's reform movement since 1998 before formally joining PKR in 2012, and was the secretary of the Sungai Kandis constituency election machinery for the candidate contesting in GE14, the late Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei.

At the division level, Mohd Zawawi, who is just Ustaz Zawawi to friends, is much involved in ceramah programs, training of members, leaders and campaign machinery to empower the party at the grassroots as coach and commandant.

The PKR Religious Understanding and Consolidation Bureau (BIPPA) secretary was conferred the Selangor Distinguished Teacher (Selangor Islamic Religious Department) award in 2003 and was formerly the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM) National Consultative Council deputy chairman and former member of the Selangor Islamic Religious Council Missionary Body from 2008 until 2012.

Internationally, he had served as a coordinator of the Shariah Implementation Forum in Aceh, Indonesia in 2017 and was the coordinator of the BIPPA Sacrifice Worship Mission to Cambodia in 2017.

In addition to his mother tongue, Mohd Zawawi also speaks English, Arabic and Javanese.

The Sungai Kandis state by-election is called following the death of Mat Shuhaimi on July 2 due to lymphoma. Nomination is this Saturday and polling on Aug 4.

In GE13, Mat Shuhaimi, who was formerly the Political Secretary to the former Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, retained the state seat for the third term after defeating BN, PAS and Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) candidates with 23,998 votes.

The Sungai Kandis constituency has 51,230 registered voters consisting of 51,217 ordinary voters and 13 overseas voters.
