Dr M begins work from PMO, chairs first cabinet meeting

PUTRAJAYA, May 23 (MySinchew) -- Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad started working from the Prime Minister's Office at Perdana Putra here today.

He had previously operated at his office at Perdana Leadership Foundation after Pakatan Harapan won the 14th general elections on May 9.

Dr Mahathir arrived at the Perdana Putra lobby at 8.25 am and was welcomed by Prime Minister's Department senior deputy secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohd Zuki Ali.

He then proceeded to the fifth floor where his office is situated and was greeted by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa. Prayers were recited before he entered his office.

He also signed the commencement of duty letter.

Dr Mahathir later chaired the first cabinet meeting at 9.25 am.

Before the meeting started, Dr Mahathir joined a photo session with cabinet ministers.

Also present were Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Ali Hamsa and Cabinet deputy secretary-general Tan Sri Mazidah Abdul Majid.

Among the highlights of the first cabinet meeting:

- Several government-linked agencies and institutions will be disbanded, including Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), Special Affairs Department, Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MaGIC), National Council of Professors (MPN) and Federal Village Development and Security Committee (JKKKP).

- The cabinet is studying ways to slash the country's debt now standing in excess of RM1 trillion.

- The government has no intention to buy back Proton.

- Retail fuel prices will not be raised for the time being although crude oil prices have hit US$70 per barrel.

- The salaries of cabinet ministers will be slashed by 10%.
