JENJAROM (Sin Chew Daily) -- The renowned Chinese New Year lantern festival at Fo Guang Shan (FGS) Dong Zen Temple in Jenjarom, Kuala Langat is up again, and dog takes center stage this year in conjunction with the Year of Dog.

The lantern festival which signifies peace, will be officially launched on the night of February 14, together with a floral festival.

The highlight of the lantern festival is loyalty, in line with a couplet written by Venerable Master Hsng Yun stressing loyalty.

Dog is a loyal friend of man. Hence a giant lantern in the shape of dog at a height of 30 feet rotating at 360 degrees is the highlight of the festival.

It took volunteers several months to assemble the lantern made of thousands of tiny bulbs.

A swan musical fountain at the entrance of the temple is another highlight not to be missed. Four giant lanterns signify Four Great Bodhisattva resembling compassion, wisdom, great vows and actions are at the fountain.

While Sichuan is famous for the "face changing" show, the facial masks are presented in another set of lanterns here.

Children's attention will invariably be caught by Disney World lanterns. Lanterns in the shapes of Dalmatian dogs, Winnie the Pooh are here to celebrate Chinese New Year too!

Cultural show and floral parade are events lined up to celebrate the Year of Dog at the temple in addition to the floral festival.

The efforts put in by the temple in organizing the lantern festival and all the events surrounding it –- art exhibition, cultural shows, costume parade, among others -- make it all the worthwhile to travel to Jenjarom this festive season.

Started by Dong Zen’s former abbot Ven Hui Xian in 2004, the lantern festival has since become a signature event attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year.

Ven Jue Cheng said she hoped visitors would find happiness and peace visiting the temple.

The FGS Dong Zen Temple CNY Lantern and Floral Festival is being held from Feb 14 to March 4. Opening hours are from 10am to 10pm. Admission is free.
