Liow's chances tied to Adnan's fate

  • If Adnan opts to "retire" before GE14, Liow's winning chances could be impacted due to the loss of Malay voters supporting the MB.

PETALING JAYA, Jan 24 (Sin Chew Daily) -- The winning chances of MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai in the Bentong parliamentary election will be tied to the fate of Pahang menteri besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.

Sin Chew Daily has been tipped that Adnan told people near to him that if he chose to "retire" before the next general elections, the chances of Liow could be impacted due to the loss of Malay voters supporting the menteri besar.

According to insider information, Adnan's votes were mainly personal votes, and if if chose not to run in GE14, these votes would likely go for the opposition.

"If the PM wants to keep Liow Tiong Lai, he has to keep the MB and Bentong as well."

It has been widely rumored that prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is keen to replace Adnan, who has been Pahang MB since 1999.

"If the PM wants to replace the MB. he must ensure this will not affect the winning chances of BN's seats."

However, given the many economy-boosting initiative introduced by MCA in Bentong, the information source says it is still possible to keep the Bentong seat, although Liow's voicing up on RUU355 might irritate some Malay voters in the constituency.

Bentong is a mixed constituency with 26,835 Chinese voters (46.6%) and 24,224 Malay voters (42.1%).

Liow won by a razor-thin margin of 379 votes against DAP's Wong Tack in 2013.
