DOE has final say in project approval

  • Wan Junaidi says the environment department will have the final say in whether a project will be approved in future.

PUTRAJAYA, Dec 4 (Sin Chew Daily) -- Natural resources and environment minister Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said his ministry was in the process of drawing up a new environmental impact assessment (EIA) system, and the ministry would have the final say in whether a development project would be approved in future.

Wan Junaidi said during an interview with Sin Chew Daily that under the new system, the environment department would first assess the environmental impact of a project.

"Once the environment department approves the project, a meeting of relevant departments will be called to discuss the project, and if everyone says no, then the project will not proceed.

"If only two or three departments are against it, we will find out the reasons from them. The environment department will only issue the development guidelines if the project is eventually approved.

"However, if the environment department says no, then everything has to stop."

Wan Junaidi said the environment ministry was drafting the system in response to the landslide at a construction site in Tanjung Bungah, Penang, to further clarify the jurisdiction of the ministry in any project in relation to the environment.
