Probe Mahathir over 'pirates' remarks: Sultan

  • Selangor Sultan urges the police to investigate Mahathir under Sedition Act 1948 over his "Bugis pirates" remarks at the Oct 14 anti-kleptocracy rally.

SHAH ALAM, Nov 2 (MySinchew) -- Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor has expressed disappointment over the remarks of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on the Bugis, and has urged the police to investigate him under Sedition Act 1948 and take the necessary legal actions.

In a statement signed by Secretary of the Council of Selangor Royal Court Hanafisah Jais. the Sultan said such remarks were intended to incite hatred among the people against the Bugis people and could potentially trigger riots.

At the anti-kleptocracy rally on October 14, Mahathir said prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak should return to the ancestral home of "Bugis pirates" in Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Several organizations have since lodged police reports against Mahathir, while the Johor Bugis Association has asked him to return all the honorary titles conferred by the Malay Rulers, as most Malay royal families have had Bugis ancestry.
