PKR's EGM could be dropped

  • Anwar feels that it is unnecessary to hold an EGM now that Pakatan Harapan has decided not to work with PAS.

PETALING JAYA, Sept 5 (Sin Chew Daily) -- PKR's emergency general meeting on possible cooperation with PAS in the upcoming general elections could be aborted.

The Pakatan Harapan action committee formed by eight PKR divisions has earlier urged the party leadership to convene an EGM within one month to allow the grassroots to decide whether to cooperate with PAS in GE14.

However, Sin Chew Daily has been tipped that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim insisted in a statement that he would respect Pakatan Harapan's decision not to cooperate with PAS on seat allocation, and that there was no necessity for an EGM.

When approached by Sin Chew Daily, Pakatan Harapan action committee chairman cum PKR Rembau division chief Yusuf Tapar declined to divulge the committee's next course of action. However, he said, "We'll know within one or two days.

"We're still awaiting the instruction from above," he added.

When contacted, PKR's secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail refused to comment on whether he had received the letter calling for an EGM.

According to an information source, while PKR's recent political bureau meeting has decided not to cooperate with PAS in GE14, the party will not stop deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali from approaching PAS over seat allocation in order to fight BN one-on-one.

"According to Anwar's letter to the party, he allows Azmin to contact PAS in private under three conditions: that the discussion is done within the Pakatan Harapan framework, that PAS is willing to talk, and that discussion on seat allocation must involve the whole country and not just Selangor.

"If Azmin really negotiates with PAS, he will have to brief the party's political bureau as well as Pakatan Harapan supreme council on the outcome."
