Not your kind of kopitiam

SERI KEMBANGAN (Sin Chew Daily) -- The name "Ah Loh Kopitiam" would readily conjure up the image of a traditional coffee shop that sells all sorts of local food we are familiar with.

Not quite. "Ah Loh Kopitiam" is not a physical coffee shop but an organization that regularly takes part in charity food sales.

64-year-old Teo, the organization's founder, told Sin Chew Daily "Ah Loh Kopitiam" had taken part in over 30 charity sales since its establishment in 2009, and had more than 30 fixed members throughout Kuala Lumpur and Subang.

4 or 5 charity sales a year

At the invitation of one of the members by the nickname of "Ah Loh", the group took part in a charity food sale in Ipoh.

"A Buddhist priest asked us the organization's name, so I told Ah Loh since he brought us to Ipoh for the charity sale, we would just call ourselves 'Ah Loh Kopitiam' as we sold all sorts of local delicacies like chee cheong fun, nasi lemak, yong tau fu, curry puffs and things you would normally find in a kopitiam," she said.

"Ah Loh Kopitiam" takes part in about four or five charity sales each year, and 100% of the proceeds will go to charity organizations."

Teo explained, "Ah Loh Kopitiam" started with only three or four stalls but today there are over a dozen.

She admitted that there were times when "business" was bad, and the stalls would pack their leftover food and leave it at a "food exchange corner" where members could enjoy one another's offerings.
